Primary English: first words and first sentences

Everyday vocabulary, pronunciation, to be and to have, simple questions: a solid start in English between ages 6 and 12.

In primary English the goal is not grammar: it is the ear and the confidence. A child who dares to repeat and get it wrong progresses faster than one who knows the rules but never opens their mouth.

What your child works on

  • Everyday vocabulary: colours, numbers, animals, family, school, food.
  • The English sounds that do not exist in the child's first language, and the rhythm of words.
  • Introducing yourself, saying your age, what you like and what you do not.
  • The verbs to be and to have, and the present simple in positive, negative and question forms.
  • Asking and understanding common questions: what, where, who, how old, how many.

How Twinko helps with this subject

A tutor that asks instead of answering

Prof Twinko releases help in stages: a nudge, then a lead, then the method. The full solution only comes as a last resort.

Lessons generated on the exact topic

You say what is not working, the age band and the difficulty. The lesson and its exercises are written for that request — not pulled from a catalogue.

XP that leads to a real reward

Every completed lesson earns XP, redeemable against the reward you set yourself. That is what brings the child back the next day.

Frequently asked questions

Should English start early?

The ear is especially receptive before age 10, so yes for listening and pronunciation. Pushing written grammar too early, on the other hand, often discourages without adding much.

My child refuses to speak English. How do I unblock that?

The block comes from fear of mispronouncing in front of someone. Practising with a tutor that does not judge and corrects gently removes that barrier — which is exactly what Twinko's conversation mode is for.

How much time per week?

Ten minutes a day beats an hour at the weekend. A language consolidates through frequency, not through session length.
