Primary geography: reading a map and discovering the world
Finding your bearings on a map, continents and oceans, landscapes, climate and the difference between town and countryside.
Primary geography starts from lived space — the street, the school, the town — and works outwards to the world. A child who can draw a map of their own neighbourhood is ready to read a world map.
What your child works on
- Orientation: plan, map, key, compass points, from the neighbourhood to the world map.
- Name and locate the continents, the oceans and a few major countries.
- Recognise the main landscape types: mountain, coast, plain, desert, forest.
- Understand climates and why the weather is not the same everywhere at the same time.
- Compare town and countryside: housing, travel, activities.
How Twinko helps with this subject
A tutor that asks instead of answering
Prof Twinko releases help in stages: a nudge, then a lead, then the method. The full solution only comes as a last resort.
Lessons generated on the exact topic
You say what is not working, the age band and the difficulty. The lesson and its exercises are written for that request — not pulled from a catalogue.
XP that leads to a real reward
Every completed lesson earns XP, redeemable against the reward you set yourself. That is what brings the child back the next day.
Frequently asked questions
Where do you start geography with a young child?
With what they know: have them draw the route from home to school, with a key. Map reading is learned at that scale, not on a world map.
How do you memorise continents and oceans?
Through short, frequent repetition on a blank map. Three minutes a day is enough — and that is exactly the format of Twinko's daily missions.
Are geography and history handled together?
In the app the two are grouped under "History-Geo" for progress tracking, but you can create a lesson covering only one of them.
