Secondary English: tenses, comprehension and expression

Tenses, irregular verbs, reading and listening comprehension, conversation and writing: progress in secondary English at your own pace.

At secondary level English shifts from discovery to demand: compound tenses, long texts, graded speaking. The students who progress are those who practise speaking regularly, not those who revise the most word lists.

What your child works on

  • Pick the right tense: present simple or continuous, past simple, present perfect, future.
  • Master the most frequent irregular verbs — the ones that genuinely recur in texts.
  • Understand a text or a recording without translating word for word.
  • Hold a conversation: react, keep it going, ask for a rephrase when you did not follow.
  • Write a structured text — email, opinion piece, narrative — with varied connectors.

How Twinko helps with this subject

A tutor that asks instead of answering

Prof Twinko releases help in stages: a nudge, then a lead, then the method. The full solution only comes as a last resort.

Lessons generated on the exact topic

You say what is not working, the age band and the difficulty. The lesson and its exercises are written for that request — not pulled from a catalogue.

XP that leads to a real reward

Every completed lesson earns XP, redeemable against the reward you set yourself. That is what brings the child back the next day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the past simple and the present perfect?

The past simple reports a finished fact located in the past ("I saw him yesterday"). The present perfect links past to present: the precise moment does not matter, only the current result does ("I have seen that film"). As soon as a date or a specific moment appears, it is the past simple.

How do you train listening comprehension?

By listening short and often, several times to the same clip, rather than long and once. The second and third listen deliver far more than the first.

Can you practise speaking with Twinko?

Yes: the tutor converses out loud, corrects the phrasing and keeps the exchange going, without the stress of a listener who judges.
